The Oracle LTO-8 Ultrium 8 data cartridge (P/N 7118476) stores 12TB of uncompressed data and up to 30TB compressed, twice the native capacity of LTO-7. It is a practical way to back up and archive large data sets, from virtual machine backups and databases to video files and compliance records.
Fast, high-capacity backup
LTO-8 drives write to this cartridge at up to 360 MB/s uncompressed and up to 750 MB/s compressed, which shortens backup windows for large data sets. The cartridge uses barium ferrite tape, which keeps data stable over long periods and supports an archival life of up to 30 years when stored correctly.
Works across LTO-8 hardware
LTO is an open standard, so this Oracle cartridge works in LTO-8 drives and libraries from any LTO-compliant brand, including IBM, HPE, Quantum, and Dell. LTO-9 drives can also read and write it. It supports drive-based AES 256-bit encryption to protect stored data, and LTFS (Linear Tape File System), which lets you open files on the tape like files on a disk. Custom EDP barcode labels are available if needed.
Ideal for:
What is the capacity of an LTO-8 tape?
An LTO-8 cartridge holds 12TB of uncompressed (native) data. The 30TB figure assumes a 2.5:1 compression ratio, which is reached when data compresses well, such as text files and databases. Already compressed data, like video and photos, will be closer to 12TB.
Will this Oracle LTO-8 tape work in an IBM, HPE, or Quantum drive?
Yes. LTO is an open standard, so any LTO-8 cartridge works in any LTO-8 drive, whatever the brand. The Oracle label does not limit which LTO-8 hardware you can use it with.
Is LTO-8 backward compatible?
An LTO-8 drive can read and write LTO-7 cartridges, and can also format new LTO-7 cartridges as LTO-7 Type M media with 9TB capacity. LTO-8 drives cannot read LTO-6 or older tapes. LTO-9 drives can read and write this LTO-8 cartridge.
Does LTO-8 support encryption?
Yes. LTO-8 drives encrypt data with AES 256-bit encryption as it is written to the tape. You need encryption keys managed by your backup software or a key manager to read the data back, which protects the tape if it is lost or stolen.
How long does data last on LTO-8 tape?
LTO-8 media is rated for up to 30 years of archival life when stored in the right conditions, which means a cool, dry place away from strong magnetic fields. Store cartridges upright in their cases and let them adjust to room temperature before use.
