Tandberg announced today that its all-new LTO-6 “half-height” Fibre Channel external desktop tape drive is available.

The drive is capable of backing up a gigantic 6.25 TB of data on one cartridge and offers an impressive compression rate of 2.5:1. Specifically developed for media, entertainment, broadcasting, and imaging applications, the LTO-6 Tandberg drive is extremely stable and easy to use.

For organizations utilizing Macs for backup, the LTO-6 HH FC offers a portable backup solution when used with a Fibre Channel-to-Thunderbolt bridge solution. Plus, LTO-6 comes equipped with the impressive Linear Tape File System, which is ideal for sharing large files.

The LTO-6’s capacity is 2.5 TB native/6.25 TB compressed and a transfer rate of 1.4 TB/HR compressed. Organizations needing to store tape for many years can depend on LTO to last for 30-plus years. This is why tape is the ideal solution for off-line data backups and long-term storage.

Additionally, the LTO-6 tape media is amazingly cost-efficient -- averaging out to $.02/GB per cartridge. Not to mention LTO is eco-friendly, as it can be purged of data and reused. Currently, the LTO-6 HH FC external tape drive is on the market for about $3,499.

Tandberg’s release signifies three important things:

1. Tape is alive and well.
2. Each LTO tape drive released to the market keeps getting better and better.
3. The market for LTO drives and tape is expected to continue growing.
